This morning as I was making our coffee I noticed a Monarch butterfly enjoying the salvia in the containers on the patio. Later, I saw it in a rather odd position out there as I was watering, and so I went by for a closer look. No wonder it was in such an odd position. It was now serving as lunch for a praying mantis.
Now I have mixed feelings about this, because I love the monarchs. But I also love my praying mantises, and I am happy to see this gravid female getting a good meal.
I know Mantis’s are good sometimes but I just don’t like them. Bad Mantis.
Well, we all have to eat to live. I don’t know that there can be a moral position for mantises. You wait, and you eat what comes or you don’t eat. Very practical. And they do serve me so well in my garden.
Survival is often not a pretty thing. It just is.

As someone who bases more than 50% of her art on the flowers found in other people’s gardens, I want to thank you first for growing one and second for listing me in your link of artists. What a nice surprise! 🙂
